Sanjay Leela Bhansali is overwhelmed with response to Mary Kom trailer. He is the co-producer along with Viacom18 Productions of the upcoming Biopic.
The Mary Kom trailer which was released a few days, has been hugely appreciated for Priyanka Chopra’s hard work and her power packed performance. Though, Priyanka received good feedback, critics have slammed the actor as there is no physical resemblance between the five-times world boxing champion Mary Kom and her.
Sanjay justifies that Priyanka doesn’t need to look like Mary Kom since he she looks convincing with her performance.
“Priyanka doesn’t resemble Mary Kom but she has captured the star athlete’s “soul” for the role.We wanted to tell Mary Kom’s story. Her life has everything. Drama, passion, valour, warmth, humour. Her story was waiting to be told on screen. I am honoured that we are doing it. Now that we’ve completed the film, it is impossible to imagine anyone but Priyanka playing Mary Kom. She has lived the role. She breathes life into every pore of the character.”
Replying to the critics for no-resemblance of Priyanka as Mary Kom, Bhansali said: “I don’t think the physical resemblance is as important as capturing the soul of the person that the actor is portraying. How much like Charlie Chaplin did Robert Downey Jr look in ‘Chaplin’? Did Meryl Steep actually resemble Nora Ephron in ‘Heartburn’, or Robert De Niro…did he actually look like Al Capone in the ‘The Untouchables’? Or Van Kilmer in ‘The Doors’..did he actually look like Jim Morrison? No they didn’t! It’s the core, the essence of the personality that matters. And Priyanka has captured the soul of Mary Kom.”
Sanjay even held a surprise birthday party for Priyanka Chopra after she returned to Mumbai from Barcelona wrapping up the shoot of Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Ko. The who’s who of B-Town were invited and it was a complete star-glitz party. Parineeti Chopra, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Kangana Ranaut, Sunidhi Chauhan, Rekha, Simi Garewal, Shraddha Kapoor, Vishal Bharadwaj were to name a few from the list.
The movie is slated to release on 5th September.
